Hundreds of thousands of pages are being scanned by our hard-working students so that you may have the opportunity to view them for free on-line!
The Scanning Process: Here's what we do to make these available to you!
STEP 1: PREPARE A document needs some attention before feeding it into the scanner. All rough edges need to be smoothed out, marks need to be erased, staples removed, pages put in order, etc.
STEP 2: SCAN Once prepared, the paper is placed in a Canon copy machine feeder connected to an IKON Doc Send scanner. The copy machine sends the images to the scanner where they are de-speckled and de-skewed. From here, they are sent directly to our server to be stored under their respective catalog numbers.
STEP 3: CATALOG Once scanned, the document is cataloged in the CyberTools digital library and is given a hyperlink to its saved PDF file.
Downloading the PDF file:
Each print-based item that has been digitized will have a link that looks like this: Click here for PDF file. (Not a hyperlink.)
Click on this link and the actual document will open up for you in Adobe Acrobat Reader as a printable PDF file. You are free to print the document as many times as you'd like.
Download Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 free at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Section 508 Compliant PDF's: When a document is scanned, it is run through OCR (optical character recognition). OCR allows the image of a PDF to contain selectable and readable text. Because we do not have the capacity to edit the OCR of every single PDF, they may not be immediately section 508 compliant for a screen reader. However, we can edit the text using Abbyy Fine Reader. Any PDF can be made fully accessible by emailing a request with the catalog number of the item to ncrtm@usu.edu.
NOTE: Print-based materials may be purchased through NCRTM in two formats. Files can be saved on CD or printed and bound. See Ordering Materials for more details.
